Hui ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi

The On-Line Conversational Hawaiian Learning Group

THE WEEKLY MEETUP IS CURRENTLY AT ITS LIMIT

There has been such an interest in participating in the Hui ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi that the number of registrations has reached a point where the size of the group would be ineffective and unsustainable. I want to personally express my deep appreciation for everyone who has an interest in furthering their Hawaiian language skills and who is interested in the Hui ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.

At this time the waitlist has been filled and new registrations are closed.

Please note: If you were a previous DuoLingo group participant, please use the "Send Us An Email" button on the top of the page to let me know you were previously an attendee and you would like to join.

Welcome To The Hui ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi - The Hawaiian Language Conversational Learning Group

Since 2019 we have been meeting on-line every week to speak, interact, learn, and expand our understanding of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian language. Our group was initially sponsored by DuoLingo, the language learning app. In January, 2023, DuoLingo discontinued their on-line live classroom program to focus on other aspects of their application development. The weekly meetups continue here, sponsored directly by Iokepa and Anita Bardwell and through your generous and much appreciated support. There is no cost for participating in the Hui ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.

What Do We Do In The Hui?

Our weekly meetup is not a structured class so there is no fixed syllabus that we follow. The objective of our meetup is twofold:

  1. Provide an opportunity and a framework for everyone to practice speaking
  2. Learn new vocabulary and grammar

These objectives are met through a combination of interactive conversations and structured lessons. The interactive conversations often involve discussing what's happening in a picture that's shown to the group.

To join the Hui, fill out the registration form at the bottom of this page and submit it. You'll get the Zoom link and links to access the Google Drive containing reference and learning material.

Who's In The Hui?

Your hosts, Iokepa and Anita Bardwell, are students of the language just like everyone else. They've been studying with the parents of Punana Leo o Maui since 2014 and have been students of Hawaiian at the University of Hawaiʻi since 2018. They are two of the five authors that released the Hawaiian Reference Grammar book in 2019, now in it's fifth edition. Iokepa and Anita are not native speakers and are always open to being corrected when they mispronounce something, leave off a diacritical mark, or make a grammar mistake!

Many of the members of the Hui are 2nd- and 3rd-year university level speakers. They are all willing to help less experienced speakers during discussions. Some of the participants are essentially complete beginners, having only gone through a few lessons with DuoLingo or other study methods. These participants may find some things confusing at times, but that's OK - it's the way to learn!
